From baby rhyme sessions and miniature train rides to youth activities and specialist care, families across the Avon Valley can find practical ways to play, learn and seek support. Northam and Toodyay host several local options, while regional, statewide and online programs extend access across the Wheatbelt.

Northam Library

Young families can choose Rhyme Time for babies from birth to two years, Activity Time for children aged 18 months to three years, or Story Time for ages three to five. Term-time Lego sessions cater for school-aged children, while teen Dungeons & Dragons is offered when a Dungeon Master is available. Bring current ID showing an address when applying for library membership.

Northam Aquatic Facility

This seasonal facility combines a toddler pool, water slides, a children’s play area and shaded picnic spaces. Ready, Set, Swim covers infant, toddler, preschool and after-school lessons, with sensory-friendly sessions also available. Children aged four and under require a supervising adult who has paid admission. The facility closes for winter from May to September.

Toodyay Public Library

Children can take part in singalongs, creative crafts and other library activities. Membership is free for residents of Toodyay and surrounding areas, although anyone under 18 needs permission from a parent or guardian to join.

Duidgee Park and Toodyay Miniature Railway

Plan an active family outing around the park’s playground, skate park and open grass beside the river, with miniature train rides nearby. Check the railway’s current operating arrangements before making a special trip.

Blue Light WA®

Northam and York both have Blue Light WA units offering supervised recreation and community activities for children and young people. Local programs may include discos, pool parties, sport, movie nights and family events, so check what is currently running in each town.

Parenting Connection WA

Parents and carers of children aged 0–18 can access free education events through this statewide program, including online options suitable for Avon Valley families. Topics, dates and locations change over time.

In Balance Physiotherapy and Fitness

Based in East Northam, the practice provides disability services for children, teenagers and adults, as well as physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. Families can enquire directly about assessments, therapy choices and access arrangements.

Wheatbelt Psychology Services

❤ Mental health and family support

Wheatbelt Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

Children and young people up to 18, together with families and carers, can receive specialist assessment, treatment or support for emotional and mental health concerns. The service has a Northam clinic plus Wheatbelt outreach and telehealth. Self-referrals and referrals from families, carers, GPs, schools and other services are accepted.

Wheatbelt Youth Mental Health Program

Young people aged 15–24 can access confidential assessment, treatment and management through a Northam clinic, outreach, telephone or video consultations. Young people may refer themselves, or a family member, carer, GP, school or other service may make the referral.

Wheatbelt Family Therapeutic Services

This Northam-based service supports children, young people and families affected by child sexual abuse and related trauma. It also assists people under 18 who have engaged in, or may be at risk of, harmful sexualised behaviours. Referrals mainly come from the Department of Communities, but parents and other agencies may also refer.

Relationships Australia WA Counselling

Booked counselling appointments are available in Northam for concerns including parenting, relationship breakdown, family and domestic violence, stress and conflict. No referral is required, and session fees use a sliding scale based on household income.

Share & Care Community Services Group

Based in Northam and serving regional WA, Share & Care provides welfare and family services in areas including food, housing, financial aid, safety, knowledge and support. Its office can help families identify an appropriate program or local pathway.
