Distinguished and Famous people from The Avon Valley
The Avon Valley's notable connections include a Northam-born soldier and a botanist who established his home near Toodyay. Their stories belong to particular towns and properties within the valley, while their work and service extended much farther.
🎖️ Hugo Throssell VC
Hugo Throssell was born in Northam in 1884 and worked on cattle stations and a wheat property before the First World War. Serving with the 10th Light Horse, he survived the charge at the Nek and received the Victoria Cross for his actions at Hill 60 on Gallipoli. After the war he married writer Katharine Susannah Prichard and lived at Greenmount. Northam preserves his memory through local commemoration, while his later home belongs to a different district.
🌿 James Drummond
Botanist and plant collector James Drummond moved to the Toodyay district in 1838 and established his home at Hawthornden. The property became a base for family life and botanical collecting in Western Australia. His journeys and specimens contributed to the scientific description of the colony's plants. Toodyay's historical records also acknowledge the Noongar guide Babbing in the 1836 party that explored the valley with Drummond and other newcomers, placing local knowledge alongside the European accounts.
